The Skababs

Hailing from Midlothian, this Ska/2tone band had the Reivers Sports Bar in Galashiels jumping on Saturday 26th July 2014..

I must confess I've never been to see a Ska band playing before, but I know there is an increasing number of people following this kind of music in the Borders and I was curious to see what the attraction was.

I had to fight my way through an enthusiastic crowd in the Reveirs bar to try and get a photo of the band playing, they're a large band with a very full sound that seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves and the audience were loving what they were playing, the audience were obviously regular followers as they were kitted out in the same 2tone attire as the band, in fact it was difficult to see who was in the band and who was watching at first glance as they intigrated themselves so well and were at one with their audience..I enjoy this way of performing as there is no higherarchy to it and everyone feels part of the same thing..

I only managed to catch a couple of songs as I had a busy night on the 26th with three bands playing in Gala all at the same time, but I'm really glad I got to see these guys and experience their sound, from the little snipbit that I did manage to catch I thought they were great and can see this kind of music managing to find it's way into more venues here in the Borders.

Well done to the Reivers in Gala for their choices in bands, they often take the risk and head out of mainstream into cultural blues and now ska, I think on this occassion as with many others it is really paying off for them..

I hope to get along another time to do a proper review of the Skababs, but in the mean time if you'd like to find out more about them them please look them up on facebook, here's a link to their page: The Skababs
